Self-Care Week 2023

Your local health services are supporting Self Care Week 2023 by sharing information to help you be more confident in managing your own health.

We all care for ourselves in many ways every day without realising it, from eating and drinking properly, washing our hands regularly and cleaning our teeth to getting a good night’s sleep.

However, there are many more ways that we could do more to look after ourselves and to reduce our chances of becoming ill.

Diet, weight management and exercise are three key elements of a healthy lifestyle. If you eat a balanced diet and drink the right things, in the right quantities, lead an active lifestyle and maintain a healthy weight, your chances of developing cancer or diabetes or of having a heart attack or stroke will be much lower. Quitting smoking and adhering to the recommended alcohol guidelines will also have beneficial impacts on your health.

The importance of quality sleep cannot be overstated. Getting enough sleep on a regular basis boosts your mental performance, your mood and can support a healthy immune system.

Many people live with long-term health conditions, which might involve medication, following specific routines or eating or drinking special foods. This is all self-care and getting it right can be the difference between leading a relatively ‘normal’ life and being seriously unwell.

If you do become ill or injured, it’s important to remember that many common ailments and minor injuries, from stomach upsets, colds and small cuts and grazes, can be treated at home with the help of a well-stocked medicine cabinet or first aid kit. Your local pharmacist can support you with that.

When it’s something you can’t treat yourself, another important part of self-care is making the right choice on which service to contact, as this knowledge can get you to the right place and the right treatment with less delay and less fuss.

Frimley Health and Care Integrated Care System has lots of information and advice on its website and will be sharing messages during Self-Care Week to highlight specific areas.
